Privacy policy
The same notice members see in the app (Settings & privacy → Privacy policy).
What we collect
Your name, email address, year of birth, town, profile details (photo, about me, profession, interests), what you post (posts, comments, stories, photos, videos, listings, questions and answers), messages, saved items, RSVPs, booking requests (including the phone number you give) and reports you send.
What we never collect
Your exact location or your full postcode are never stored. Kenyans Near Me uses the town you choose and, only if you turn it on, the first part of your postcode (see Location below).
Why we use it
To run the app and your account, show your posts to members, connect you with neighbours, send notifications and reminders you ask for, keep members safe and contact you about your account.
Who can see it
Your email is never shown to other members. Your name, photo and town are shown in Kenyans Near Me only if you turn on Discoverable, and you choose who sees your details, stories and photo in Settings & privacy. Reports are seen only by moderators. A booking request (name, dates, budget, phone) is shared only with the partner travel agent handling it.
Where it is stored
In Google Firebase (Google Cloud), which JIRANI254 uses to run the app. We do not sell your data. Videos you post are stored securely, can be seen only by signed-in members, and are deleted when you delete the post or your account.
How long we keep it
While your account is open. Stories disappear after 24 hours. When you delete your account we delete your profile and listings.
Location (optional)
If you choose to turn on "Nearby by postcode area", we store the first part of your postcode (for example MK9 or X91), never your full postcode or address. We use it only to show other members roughly how far away you are, in bands such as "about 5 miles", "5–10 miles" or "10–15 miles". Your postcode area is never shown to other members, and exact distances are never shown. Our legal basis is your consent. You can switch this off at any time in Settings, and we delete your postcode area straight away. You can set a new area once every 30 days, so we keep the date you last set one. If you also turn on "Travelling", the app checks your phone's approximate location only while the app is open, never in the background. It is used once to work out the town you are visiting and is not kept. If you are more than 25 miles from home, other members see "Travelling" and that town (town only) for up to 3 days. You can switch Travelling off at any time and the town is removed straight away. We never keep a location history. Your postcode area is included when you export your data and is deleted when you delete your account.
Your rights
You can see, correct or delete your data, change your privacy settings at any time, and delete your account in Settings & privacy. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
If you live in Ireland, you can also complain to the Data Protection Commission (www.dataprotection.ie).
Measuring how the app is used
To check whether JIRANI254 really helps members find services, opportunities and support, and only if you switch on usage measurement, we record meaningful actions (such as searching, viewing a listing, saving, posting, messaging, sending an enquiry or booking) under a coded ID instead of your name or email, plus the town on your profile. We never record message contents, search words, documents, exact addresses or precise location. Only JIRANI254 admins see the totals, small groups are hidden, and nothing is shown on profiles or membership cards. Answers to the optional question "Did this help you find what you needed?" are your own report. Usage records are kept for up to 25 months and are removed if you delete your account. Usage measurement is off unless you switch it on in Settings & privacy, and you can switch it off again at any time.
